Stopping the Spiral: Addressing Functional Weakness in Seniors Early.

As we age, our bodies undergo significant physiological changes that directly impact our independence. Research indicates that by age 70, a woman could have 50% to 70% less strength than she possessed at age 30. This decline accelerates after age 60, with power decreasing at a staggering rate of 3% to 5% annually.
This loss of power and strength is not just a natural part of aging—it is a critical health marker. Diminished physical capacity is a leading cause of nursing home admissions and debilitating falls. It often creates a "vicious cycle": inactivity leads to weakness, which promotes further inactivity, eventually resulting in functional disability.
At Achieva Rehabilitation, we believe in breaking this cycle. Effective strengthening practices, guided by expert physical therapy personnel, are essential to maintaining the highest level of function and achieving what we call optimal aging.
The Achieva Difference: Specialized In-Home Care
Our In-Home Physical Therapy Program was developed to prove that seniors in their "Golden Years" can thrive, regardless of their medical history. We are pushing the boundaries of traditional care to help our clients ease the worry of losing their mobility.
Unlike traditional home health or "brick and mortar" clinics, Achieva Rehabilitation offers a superior therapeutic experience:
One-on-One, 60-Minute Sessions: No divided attention or crowded gyms.
Greater Intensity: We are not limited by the same total visit restrictions often found in standard home health settings.
Real-World Results: We focus on the high-level potential of every senior, aiming for a "new life" of movement rather than just maintenance.
"I cannot say enough about Achieva Rehabilitation. After being told my husband would never walk again... Achieva took him on as a patient... he is now walking after more than 2 1/2 years in a wheelchair." — Achieva Client
Recognizing the Signs: Who Benefits Most?
Physical therapy should be a strong consideration for any senior who reports or demonstrates:
Difficulty navigating stairs.
Struggling to get off of chairs or sofas.
Visual signs of functional weakness or "unsteadiness."
We treat every client like our own family, with the ultimate goal of sending them back to their primary care team—and their lives—happier and stronger.
The 30-Second Chair Test: A Simple Strength Check
A great way to objectively measure functional strength is the "30-Second Chair Test." Simply have the individual stand up from a seated position as many times as possible in 30 seconds without using their hands.
If scores fall below these age-based averages, physical therapy is highly recommended to prevent further decline. Also, the lower the score, the higher the risk of falling:
AGE | MEN (Below Average) | WOMEN (Below Average) |
60-64 | < 14 | < 12 |
65-69 | < 12 | < 11 |
70-74 | < 12 | < 10 |
75-79 | < 11 | < 10 |
80-84 | < 10 | < 9 |
85-89 | < 8 | < 8 |
90-94 | < 7 | < 4 |
