A diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease can feel like the start of a heavyweight championship boxing match. Parkinson’s is the opponent, and it’s a tough one. But at Achieva Rehabilitation, we’ve spent over 20 years proving one thing: You can win the war for your quality of life.

Living well with Parkinson’s isn't about one giant leap; it’s about "eating the elephant one small bite at a time." By breaking challenges down into simple, high-intensity strategies, you can improve your mobility and reclaim your confidence.

Movement is Medicine: The Science of "Brain Fertilizer"

Many people are surprised to learn that intensive exercise is just as important as medication. High-intensity activity acts like "fertilizer" for your brain cells, boosting trophic factors and increasing the activity of mitochondria—your cells' energy sources.

This process helps your brain use its existing dopamine more efficiently, which is the chemical responsible for normal movement. To get the most "protective" effect for your brain, research suggests exercising three times a week with your heart rate between 80% to 85% of your maximum.

📊 How to Calculate Your Target Heart Rate

  • Step 1: Subtract your age from 220 to find your maximum heart rate.

  • Step 2: Aim for a range between 50% and 85% of that number during exercise.

  • Caution: If you take high blood pressure medication, check with your physician first, as these can affect your heart rate readings.

The Four Stages of Intervention

Physical therapy isn't just for when things "get bad." It is a tool for every step of your journey:

  1. Pre-habilitation: This is essentially prevention. Start an exercise program even if you don't have noticeable symptoms yet to develop habits that allow you to live better for longer.

  2. Rehabilitation: At this stage, we work on fixing specific problems—learning how to get out of bed more easily, improving posture, or mastering "big movements" to prevent falls.

  3. Preservation: The goal here is social and physical. Stay active, join a group, and ensure you do not lose the progress you’ve worked so hard for.

  4. Prevention: This brings the journey full circle, focusing on home modifications and care-partner training to ensure no new challenges arise.

🧊 Nine Tips to Thaw the "Freeze"

  • Try Another Movement: Raise an arm, touch your head, or point to the ceiling to "reset" your brain.

  • Change Direction: If you can’t move forward, try stepping sideways first, then proceed.

  • Use a Laser Pointer: Shine a light in front of your foot and try to "step on the light."

  • Visualize: Imagine a small object on the ground in front of you and try to step over it.

  • Use Music or Humming: Time your first step with the beat of a song or hum "1-2-3-go."

  • Weight Shift: Shift your weight from side to side to help initiate the stepping motion.

  • March in Place: Try lifting your knees high while standing still before taking a step forward.

  • Move Your Arms: If your legs won't move, focus on swinging your arms; the legs often follow.

  • Don't Fight the Freeze: Stop trying to push through. Pause, relax, and use one of the cues above.
